Niche · positioning, identity and story

Stop fitting in. Fit someone.

Most brands try to suit every buyer and end up looking like all the others. Niche finds the buyers you fit better than anyone, names the reason in a sentence they can repeat, and builds the identity and story to carry it.

The problem

Sameness is the safest way to get cut.

Fitness gets you shortlisted. Difference gets you chosen. When five brands make the same promise, buyers choose on price, or they don't choose at all.

The swap test

Your brand delivers innovative, customer-focused solutions you can trust.

Swap in

Still true. If a rival's name fits just as well, it isn't a reason to choose you.

  • 01

    Buyers can't repeat it

The champion has to sell you to the boss and the money. A promise everyone makes gives them nothing to say.

  • 02

AI answers can't tell you apart

Ask an assistant for a recommendation and it reaches for whoever is clearest about who they're for.

  • 03

    Price becomes the tiebreaker

When nothing else separates you, the cheapest option or "do nothing" wins.

What Niche covers

Six parts. One reason to choose you.

Niche is strategy you can see. Each part is built from the evidence in your Fitness Test, and each one ends up somewhere a buyer will meet it.

The Orchid Test · a market of one

Orchid, or weed?

An orchid is the flower that evolved to fit one pollinator.

Darwin was sent an orchid with a nectar spur 30 cm long. He predicted a moth with a tongue long enough to reach the bottom. Forty-one years later, it was found. The flower and its buyer fit so closely that nothing else could do the job.

That's a market of one. Not a small market: a brand so specific to its buyer that a rival can't copy the fit. Weeds will grow anywhere, so nobody goes looking for one. People go looking for orchids.

Five questions. Answer honestly, and watch what grows.

0 of 5. A weed, for now. Most brands start here.

Two ways in

Sprint first, or the whole brand?

The Sprint finds the reason to choose you and puts it into words. Full Niche carries it through how you look and sound. Many clients sprint first and add identity when they're ready.

What it comes down to

Lots of options. One survivor.

Variation, then selection. We make more than one answer on purpose, so the one you keep has beaten something.

Questions

Fair questions.

Is Niche a rebrand?

Not necessarily. The Sprint is strategy and story, and your logo can stay. Full Niche adds the identity when the old one can't carry the new position.

Won't a narrow niche shrink our market?

A niche narrows who you're the obvious choice for, not who can buy from you. Being the first pick for one clear buyer tends to pull in the buyers around them too.

Do we need a Fitness Test first?

We recommend it, because niche work goes better from evidence than opinion. If you start Niche within 90 days of your Fitness Test, the full $2,900 comes off.

How do you check it with real buyers?

We put the positioning and the three directions in front of buyers from your market before we choose, and we write down which one we expect to win first, so you can see whether we were right.

How long does it take?

Two to eight weeks, depending on whether it's a Sprint or Full Niche and how many people need to agree.

What happens after?

Niche becomes the brief for every adaptation, starting with the moment your Fitness Test found weakest. Then Generations keeps it evolving every month.
